Tiwi Island Project Australia

Launch Tiwi Islands Project Australia

We are very proud to announce the launch of Sinchi’s first community project working with the amazing Tiwi Islands mob. One of the main cultural challenges being faced around the world, is the loss of culture and knowledge with each passing generation. To address this issue, we focus on empowering communities to document their own culture. The objective to improve generational engagement and share their stories through the eyes of the community. Our first project is in Tiwi Islands, Australia. The islands have around 3,000 inhabitants, of whom around 88% are aboriginal. Most residents speaking Tiwi as their first and English as their second language. It is believed the aboriginal people have been present for 7,000 years on the islands and they are well known for the strength of their culture. Sinchi Project Director and celebrated Aboriginal photographer Wayne Quilliam is leading the programme, in which we are providing camera equipment, recording devices and a series of workshops to the community.

Participants in the initiative, will develop photography skills and we will create a book at the end of the project featuring the most interesting images and stories. The book will be made available to members of the community, educational facilities (as a template for future cultural programmes) and for purchase, to raise funds. Images will also be available for licensing and for gallery display * 100% ownership of all content remains with the community.
