Description
The Tiwi cushions are a collaboration with the Tiwi Designs Art Centre. As a result of our 2017 project, in which we provided camera equipment and workshops ran by acclaimed aboriginal photographer Wayne Quilliam.
The objective of the project is to showcase the strength and beauty of Aboriginal culture on the Tiwi Islands, Australia. These cushions are made with traditional Aboriginal Tiwi designs and are created exclusively via Tiwi Design and the community since the 1980s.
The purpose built textile printing workshop is run by Osmond Kantilla, a master printer with with his assistant Alan Kerinauia. Osmond supervises the translation of original artworks onto screens and manages the production of the hand printed fabrics. Osmond has designed screens himself and enjoys the artistic process of mixing colours and matching them to fabrics and designs.
Cushion covers itself were designed and made in collaboration with sustainable fashion designer Julia Kaleta from Poland/Netherlands.
