The Aṉangu Ngangkaṟi Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation (ANTAC) is the first organization of Aboriginal traditional healers in Australia. ANTAC is a not-for-profit social enterprise registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. ANTAC is a registered charity accredited by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission as a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) and Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR).
ANTAC is the result of a shared vision between Dr Francesca Panzironi and the Ngangkaṟi (Aboriginal traditional healers) from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY). The vision is to support the maintenance and practice of the 60,000 year-old Aboriginal traditional medical knowledge system in the XXI century. We came together to bring Ngangkaṟi’ s healing to communities, families and individuals and reach out as many people as possible.
Dr Panzironi spent four years (2008-2012) traveling across South Australia in search for answers to the lack of recognition of Aboriginal traditional medicine in international and national health policy frameworks and strategies. Her enquiry into the status and role of Aboriginal traditional medicine is articulated in Hand-in-Hand. Report on Aboriginal Traditional Medicine. The Hand-in-Hand Report provides an extensive evidence-based analysis of the status of Aboriginal traditional medicine from an international and national perspective. The Report establishes the foundations for the recognition of Aboriginal traditional medicine in Australia. The Report proposes the inclusion of Aboriginal traditional medicine within the Australia’s national health care system through the development of a two-way health care model to guarantee the systematic provision of Aboriginal traditional medicine hand-in-hand with western medicine.
ANTAC stands at the core of the proposed two-way health care model. The Ngangkaṟi came together and decided to set up their own organization to deliver their healing treatments to anyone in need. An ongoing decision-making process and several years of consultations between the Ngangkaṟi and Dr Panzironi resulted in the establishment of the first organization of Aboriginal traditional healers in Australia. We are working very hard to continue the ancient practice of Aboriginal traditional healing handed down from generations to generations in today’s world. To this purpose, ANTAC has developed a new service delivery model to make Aboriginal traditional healing accessible to the general public, health services, correctional services, any organization or institution interested to learn and experience Aboriginal traditional medicine. ANTAC’ s service delivery model consists of a range of Ngangkaṟi Services which can be accessed by everyone, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
