Every month we share indigenous news, stories and media from around the world in our round-up. With a focus on arts, culture & promoting the strength of indigenous knowledge. We also introduce new members who have joined our global collaboration network.
This month, we’re happy to feature:
Cineblend, Dutch annual documentary film festival focusing on issues of cultural diversity, now in it’s 27th year.
Empowering vulnerable local communities within the EU through art and activism, Caat Projects.
Preventing longterm poverty within displaced indigenous communities through the Indigenous Education Foundation (IEF).
IEF has done extensive long-term research in cooperation with the indigenous Mentawai community, off the coast of Sumatra (Indonesia), this brought to light stark realities regarding the current condition of their health and wellbeing. Rather than living in a stable and self-sustaining environment, as one might presume given the abundance of natural foods and resources available, a large portion of the population lives in a state of impoverishment.
Their findings revealed that these impoverished conditions are a direct result of a loss of access to the Mentawai cultural and agricultural education, and led to the community development of a Cultural and Environmental Education Program (CEEP). If you are interested to learn more about the Suku Mentawai CEEP and how you can become involved, please visit www.sukumentawai.org and watch the trailer to their documentary ‘As Worlds Divide’:
